One of the most interesting features of the gold market in 2026 is not just the price path, but the way demand itself is changing. The World Gold Council's Q1 2026 data show that total gold demand, including OTC activity, rose 2% year-on-year to 1,231 tonnes. Because prices were much higher, the value of that demand jumped 74% to a record US$193bn.

Looking more closely at the mix, jewellery demand fell in volume terms even as first-quarter spending on jewellery reached a record level; meanwhile, physical investment demand remained strong and central banks continued to buy. This points to a subtle but important shift: when gold prices are elevated, the market increasingly distinguishes between gold as a consumption item and gold as a portfolio asset.

For households, that shift changes the conversation. Jewellery demand is often more budget-sensitive: consumers may buy fewer grams when prices rise, even if overall spending remains high. By contrast, bar and coin demand tends to reflect a longer-term allocation mindset – the question is not "How does it look?", but "What role does it play in my financial plan?". Central bank buying reinforces the same point at a different scale: gold is still viewed as a strategic reserve asset rather than just a commodity or ornament.

For investors, the practical takeaway is to ask:

  • Am I thinking about gold mainly as an item of use, or as a store of value?
  • If I buy physical gold, is my objective long?term reserve, portfolio diversification or something shorter term?
  • Does the way I buy gold match the role I want it to play?

For providers of physical gold solutions, this environment creates a clear educational opportunity: help clients understand the difference between jewellery demand and investment demand, and explain how physical gold can fit into a broader wealth plan. In a year when prices are high and demand composition is shifting, the gold story is increasingly about purpose as much as price.
