Spot gold fell to approximately $4,304 per ounce on 2 September, reaching a more than three-week low, before rebounding into the $4,300s. For physical gold buyers, this highlights an important distinction: the market effectively operates with "two prices" — the reference spot price and the actual product transaction price.

World Gold Council-related data show that global bar and coin demand was around 307 tonnes in Q2 2026, official-sector net purchases were approximately 289 tonnes, and jewellery demand fell to 278 tonnes. This indicates that different physical gold products serve different buyer groups with varying price sensitivities.

From a physical gold transaction perspective, the following distinction can be useful:

?Reference spot price:

Typically refers to the international spot gold quotation, used to indicate overall market direction and liquidity conditions.

?Actual product transaction price:

Refers to the final price of specific products such as bars and coins. In addition to the reference gold price, this is influenced by product size, purity, format, brand, certification, premium, inventory, custody and delivery terms.

The two prices are related, but not identical. Possible scenarios include:

?A decline in the spot price may not lead to an equal reduction in every product’s final price if premiums or inventory conditions change;

?When the spot price rebounds, different sizes or brands may see different speeds of price adjustment;

?Over the longer term, the total cost of owning physical gold depends not only on the purchase price, but also on future buyback arrangements and related service charges.

For providers of physical gold products, the current environment supports enhanced client education. Investors can be helped to understand:

1. The difference between the reference spot price and actual product quotations;

2. Product weight, purity, size and certification;

3. Possible differences between purchase and future buyback prices;

4. Product premiums, custody fees, delivery charges and other service costs;

5. How different products may respond differently to the same spot-price movement;

6. Whether the product matches the investor’s ownership objective and time horizon.

For investors, a neutral question is:

When I observe a change in the spot gold price, do I clearly understand the final product price I will pay and the price structure I may face on a future buyback?

The spot price can serve as a market reference, but it should not be treated as the only basis for physical gold transactions. A more balanced approach is to assess the reference gold price, product terms, total ownership costs and personal holding objectives together before deciding whether bars, coins or other physical gold products fit a longer-term plan.
