After a volatile run, three questions to check whether gold still fits you

In the first half of 2026, gold once again delivered a familiar pattern: a surge to fresh record highs in January, followed by a sharp correction and a period of choppy, range-bound trading. For many individual investors, the result has been a wave of mixed messages – from "gold is finished" to "nothing has changed in the long-term story".

Demand data tell a more nuanced story. The World Gold Council reports that in Q1 2026 total gold demand, including OTC activity, rose 2% year-on-year to 1,231 tonnes. Thanks to higher prices, the value of that demand jumped 74% to a record US$193 billion. Bar and coin investment reached 474 tonnes – up 42% year-on-year and the second-highest quarter on record – with Asian investors leading the accumulation of physical products. In other words, price volatility has not prevented many investors from continuing to build or hold positions.

Rather than trying to resolve the debate with a simple "yes or no" on gold, households may find it more useful to ask whether the way they use gold still fits their situation. A practical starting point is three straightforward questions:

  1. What is the true time horizon for this part of my money?
Is it earmarked for near-term spending, or for goals 10–20 years away, such as retirement, education or intergenerational transfers? Gold's suitability can look very different across those time frames.
  2. How much fluctuation can I tolerate in that bucket?
If gold experiences a double-digit drawdown in a given year, do I have the financial and emotional capacity to hold the position, or would I be forced to exit at an unfavourable moment?
  3. Given my current mix of assets, does a modest, unlevered allocation to physical gold make the overall portfolio more resilient across scenarios – or does it simply add complexity without clear benefits?

Cross-asset studies suggest that in an environment of higher stock-bond correlation and elevated uncertainty, gold remains one of the few assets with relatively robust diversification properties. Sized appropriately, it can help smooth portfolio behaviour across different conditions rather than purely maximise short-term returns.

For providers of physical and physically-backed gold solutions, supporting clients through this kind of check-up can be more valuable than focusing on short-term price targets. Clear product structures, transparent costs and neutral educational materials can help investors answer these three questions in a way that matches their own goals and risk tolerance. When gold is framed as a long-term, scenario-aware holding – rather than a trade that must be "right" in the next few months – it becomes easier to integrate into a broader financial plan and to hold through inevitable periods of volatility.

In a year characterised by sharp market moves and diverging opinions, the most important decision for many households may not be whether to time gold perfectly, but whether their chosen way of owning it still makes sense. Once that alignment is clear, short-term price swings become part of the journey, rather than the whole story.
