Gold prices have recently moved sharply higher, but not every segment of the physical market has responded in the same way. Recent data show that bar and coin demand remained broadly stable, while jewellery demand weakened significantly, highlighting the different effects of elevated prices across gold's various uses.

On 19 August, spot gold briefly reached $4,499.20 per ounce and was up approximately 3.6% during the session, reflecting continued price volatility.

At the same time, World Gold Council data showed that global bar and coin demand stood at approximately 307 tonnes in Q2, broadly unchanged year-on-year. Supported by a strong first quarter, cumulative bar and coin demand for the first half of 2026 was still 21% higher than the same period last year.

Jewellery demand moved in the opposite direction. Global gold jewellery demand fell to 278 tonnes in Q2, down 17% year-on-year and reaching its lowest quarterly level since the pandemic.

The data point to a clear divergence in the physical market:

  • Investment-oriented physical demand remained comparatively resilient.
    Purchases of bars and coins are often linked to long-term ownership, asset allocation and demand for tangible products.
  • Jewellery demand faced greater price sensitivity.
    As gold prices rise, the total cost of jewellery typically increases, encouraging some consumers to postpone purchases, reduce the amount of gold purchased or consider different product designs.
  • A higher gold price does not mean that every form of physical demand is increasing.
    Different products serve different purposes and customer groups, so their responses to price changes can vary considerably.

For physical gold buyers, the headline price is only one part of the transaction. Other considerations may include:

  1. Product size, purity and format;
  2. The difference between purchase and buyback prices;
  3. Premiums and service charges;
  4. Inventory availability and delivery arrangements;
  5. Certification and custody solutions;
  6. The intended holding period.

For providers of physical gold products and related services, this divergence reinforces the importance of clear client education. Customers may have different objectives, including long-term physical ownership, gifting, personal use or broader asset allocation.

Product communication should therefore explain specifications, pricing, custody, delivery procedures and potential costs clearly, rather than focusing only on short-term price movements.

A neutral and useful question for investors is:

When gold prices rise, which types of demand are actually increasing — and which types are being constrained by affordability?

If investment demand is supporting the market while jewellery demand continues to weaken, this may indicate more than broad enthusiasm for gold. It may also suggest that gold is taking on a stronger role as a physical asset for allocation and ownership.

Investors considering physical gold may benefit from assessing the price, product terms, ownership objective and personal financial arrangements together. Understanding the difference between investment demand and consumption demand can help reduce decisions based solely on short-term price movements.
