Gold and silver fall ahead of Fed meeting but silver physical demand is forecast to hit a new high: short-term macro pressure and physical allocation demand coexist

On 14 September, spot gold fell approximately 0.8% to $4,312.59 per ounce, while silver declined 1.2% to $63.71 per ounce. Markets focused on the upcoming Federal Reserve rate decision, with heightened rate-hike expectations putting pressure on prices.

However, the physical demand picture tells a different story. According to the World Silver Survey 2026, published by the Silver Institute and Metals Focus, global silver bar and coin demand is forecast to rise 18% year-on-year in 2026, reaching 257.6 million ounces, the highest level since 2022.

The data highlight that in the precious metals market:

  • Short-term prices are influenced by macro events.

Factors such as the Fed meeting, CPI and PPI data can affect market sentiment and capital flows in the near term, leading to price volatility.

  • Physical allocation demand reflects medium- to long-term logic.

The rise in silver bar and coin demand indicates that some investors remain willing to increase physical allocations despite price fluctuations, with particularly strong retail demand in Western markets.

  • Short-term pressure and physical demand can coexist.

A price pullback does not necessarily mean that physical demand has disappeared; both can exist simultaneously, reflecting behaviour over different time horizons.

From a physical precious metals transaction perspective, this divergence implies that:

  • Investors should not base decisions solely on price movements around the Fed meeting;
  • Actual physical transactions also depend on product size, purity, certification, inventory, premiums and delivery terms;
  • For medium- to long-term holders, physical demand trends and ownership objectives may matter more than short-term volatility.

For providers of physical precious metals products, the current environment supports enhanced client education. Investors can be helped to understand:

  1. The distinction between short-term macro events and medium- to long-term physical demand;
  2. The relevance of different time horizons for investment decisions;
  3. Product weight, purity, brand and certification;
  4. Possible differences between purchase and future buyback prices;
  5. Custody, delivery and future handling arrangements;
  6. Whether the product matches the investor's allocation objective and time horizon.

For investors, a neutral question is:

When gold and silver fall ahead of the Fed meeting, am I reacting to short-term macro pressure, or deciding based on my medium- to long-term allocation objectives?

Price movements around the rate decision alone cannot prove that the market trend has changed. A more balanced approach is to assess short-term price volatility, physical demand data, product terms and personal allocation objectives together before deciding whether gold, silver or other physical precious metals products fit a longer-term plan.
