Gold and silver prices have become more volatile recently, with market attention often focused on "which supplier has a lower price" or "which product has a smaller premium". However, for buyers of physical gold bars, coins and silver bars, the purchase price is only part of the investment cost, and buyback terms are the key determinant of actual returns.

1. Why are buyback terms more important than purchase price?

Consider two investors purchasing the same specification of gold bars:

  • Investor A chooses a product with a lower purchase price, but buyback requires strict conditions (e.g., specific certification, intact packaging, minimum holding period), and the buyback price is calculated as spot price minus a wider spread;
  • Investor B chooses a product with a slightly higher purchase price, but buyback conditions are more flexible, the buyback price is closer to spot price, and there are no additional fees.

Even though A's initial cost is lower, B may achieve a higher net return upon liquidation.

2. Key elements of buyback terms

When comparing different suppliers, investors should focus on:

1. Buyback price calculation method

  • Spot price minus a fixed spread?
  • A percentage of the purchase price?
  • Is there a minimum buyback price guarantee?

2. Product condition requirements

  • Is original packaging and certificate required?
  • Are opened or worn products accepted?
  • Is it limited to specific brands or specifications?

3. Time restrictions

  • Is there a minimum holding period requirement?
  • Are there restrictions on buyback timing (e.g., specific hours on weekdays)?

4. Additional fees

  • Are there verification, handling or storage release fees?
  • Are fees charged as a fixed amount or a percentage?

3. How to compare buyback terms across different suppliers?

A practical comparison framework:

Actual Buyback Cost = Purchase Price - Buyback Price + Additional Fees

Net Return Rate = (Buyback Price - Purchase Price - Additional Fees) ÷ Purchase Price

Illustrative example (hypothetical figures):

  • Supplier A: Purchase price $4,300/oz, buyback price spot minus 3%, no additional fees;
  • Supplier B: Purchase price $4,320/oz, buyback price spot minus 1.5%, verification fee $20.

Assuming spot price remains at $4,300:

  • Supplier A buyback price = 4,300 × (1 - 3%) = $4,171

Net loss = 4,300 - 4,171 = $129

  • Supplier B buyback price = 4,300 × (1 - 1.5%) = $4,235.5

Net loss = 4,320 - 4,235.5 + 20 = $104.5

Even though Supplier B has a higher purchase price, the actual loss is lower.

4. Implications for providers of physical gold and silver products

For providers of gold bars, coins and silver bars, the current environment supports:

1. Transparent buyback policies

  • Clearly disclose buyback price calculation methods, product condition requirements and additional fees;
  • Provide buyback calculators or examples to help clients understand actual costs.

2. Standardised certification and packaging

  • Provide clear certification markings and original packaging to reduce verification barriers at buyback;
  • Clearly inform clients how to preserve products to meet buyback conditions.

3. Education-led communication

  • Guide clients from "looking only at purchase price" toward "comparing buyback terms";
  • Explain why transparent buyback policies are more important for long-term investors.

4. Flexible buyback options

  • Consider offering different buyback schemes (e.g., express buyback vs standard buyback);
  • Offer more favourable buyback conditions for long-term holders.

5. Neutral guidance for investors

For investors, a neutral thinking framework is:

When I compare different suppliers, am I looking at purchase prices, or calculating actual buyback costs?

A more balanced approach is to:

  • Ask suppliers for complete buyback policies, including price calculation methods, product conditions and fees;
  • Evaluate the importance of buyback terms based on your holding period and liquidation plans;
  • Confirm buyback terms in writing before purchase to avoid future disputes.

Purchase price determines cost. Buyback terms determine returns.
