Precious metals experienced significant volatility this week. Hotter-than-expected U.S. September CPI data reignited concerns about further Federal Reserve tightening, causing gold and silver to fall sharply before recovering as the dollar and Treasury yields eased.
Gold briefly fell toward $4,093 before rebounding to around $4,155, while silver dropped to approximately $56.28 before recovering to $56.78. Both metals remain under significant corrective pressure, with silver under-performing gold due to its higher volatility and industrial exposure.
Macro: Hotter CPI and PPI Revive December Hike Expectations
U.S. September CPI data came in broadly above expectations. Headline CPI rose 0.6% month on month and 3.7% year on year, exceeding forecasts of 0.2% and 3.6% respectively. Core CPI increased 0.3% month on month and 2.6% year on year, also above expectations of 0.2% and 2.5%.
Following the release, market expectations for further Federal Reserve tightening rose sharply. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the probability of an October hike rose from approximately 22% to 44%, while the odds of a December hike increased from around 86% to over 93%.
The U.S. dollar index climbed to an 18-month high, and Treasury yields rose in tandem, placing significant pressure on gold and silver. Silver's decline was particularly pronounced, falling more than 5% at one point, reflecting its greater sensitivity to interest rates and inflation expectations.
Additionally, U.S. September PPI rose 1.3% month on month, marking the largest monthly increase since March 2022, and 6.3% year on year, far above expectations, driven largely by energy costs. The PPI data further reinforced the view that inflation pressures remain persistent.
Despite the hotter inflation data, some Fed officials indicated that they are not in a rush to raise rates further, preferring to observe how economic and financial conditions evolve. This commentary helped temper concerns about an October rate hike.
Gold: Falls to $4,093 Before Rebounding to $4,155
Gold came under further pressure this week following the CPI release, falling to approximately $4,093 before recovering to around $4,155 as the dollar and yields eased.
Gold needs to reclaim $4,200 before attempting a recovery toward $4,250-$4,300. If inflation expectations continue to rise or Fed officials signal a more hawkish stance, gold could retest $4,100. A sustained break below that area could expose the market to $4,000-$4,050.
The recent rebound suggests that while expectations for further tightening have risen, they have not yet fully dominated market sentiment. Future performance will depend on real yields, the dollar and whether the Fed hikes rates again in December.
Silver: Falls to $56.28 Before Rebounding to $56.78
Silver underperformed gold significantly this week. Following the CPI release, silver fell more than 5% at one point, dropping to approximately $56.28 before recovering to $56.78 as the dollar and yields eased.
If silver can reclaim $58, prices may recover toward $60-$62. A sustained break below $56 would increase the risk of a decline toward $54-$55.
The gold-silver ratio has widened further, showing that investors currently prefer gold's safe-haven characteristics while remaining cautious about silver's industrial-demand and cyclical outlook.
Short-Term Outlook
Gold and silver experienced a sharp correction following the hotter CPI data, but both metals rebounded as the dollar and yields eased. December rate-hike expectations remain elevated, limiting the upside for precious metals.
Gold's first resistance zone is around $4,200. A sustained break above this area could allow a move toward $4,250. If inflation expectations continue to rise or Fed officials signal a more hawkish stance, gold could retest $4,100. A sustained break below that area could expose the market to $4,000.
Silver's key resistance is around $58. A break above this level could open the way toward $60-$62. A sustained move below $56 would increase the risk of a decline toward $54-$55.
The main factors to watch next week include:
If inflation expectations remain stable or decline, markets may reduce December rate-hike expectations, supporting gold and silver. Conversely, rising inflation expectations or hawkish Fed commentary could place precious metals under pressure again.
Overall, gold remains in a rebound phase from recent lows, with $4,100 as the key support zone. Silver has shown greater rebound elasticity but needs to reclaim the $56-$58 area to improve its near-term structure.
