Spot gold fell approximately 0.5% to $4,405.47 per ounce on 7 September, extending the pullback from late-August highs. At the same time, official-sector net purchases reached about 289 tonnes in Q2, up 62% year-on-year and marking the highest second-quarter total on record. Global bar and coin demand remained around 307 tonnes during the same period.

The data suggest that the physical gold market includes at least two different types of buyers:

  • Price-sensitive buyers:

More focused on short-term price movements, potentially increasing purchases when gold rises and reducing activity when prices correct.

  • Price-insensitive buyers:

More focused on the long-term ownership value and strategic allocation role of physical gold, potentially continuing to accumulate even during price corrections.

World Gold Council-related data show that official-sector net purchases reached 289 tonnes in Q2 2026, the highest second-quarter total on record and 1.62 times the level seen in Q2 2025. At the same time, bar and coin demand remained around 307 tonnes, indicating that some retail investors are still willing to maintain physical holdings despite price volatility.

From a physical gold transaction perspective, this divergence implies that:

  • A short-term price decline does not necessarily mean that all forms of gold demand are weakening at the same time;
  • Different buyers have different price sensitivities, ownership objectives and time horizons;
  • Actual physical transactions also depend on product size, purity, certification, inventory, premiums and delivery terms.

For providers of physical gold products, the current environment supports enhanced client education. Investors can be helped to understand:

1. The differences between official-sector buyers, retail physical investors and ETF holders;

2. The distinction between reference prices and actual product quotations;

3. Product weight, purity, brand and certification;

4. Possible differences between purchase and future buyback prices;

5. Custody, delivery and future handling arrangements;

6. Whether the product matches the investor's ownership objective and time horizon.

For investors, a neutral question is:

When gold prices pull back, do I behave more like a price-sensitive buyer or more like a buyer focused on long-term physical ownership?

A price decline alone cannot prove that overall market demand is weakening, nor does it guarantee that prices will rise or fall further. A more balanced approach is to assess price movements, demand-structure data, product terms and personal holding objectives together before deciding whether bars, coins or other physical gold products fit a longer-term plan.
