Gold and silver fall together but face different demand structures: gold leans on investment and store-of-value demand, silver on industrial and photovoltaic use

On 4 September, spot gold fell approximately 1.1% to $4,422.91 per ounce, while silver declined 1.7% to $65.79 per ounce. Although prices moved in the same direction, the underlying physical demand structures for gold and silver differ significantly.

The silver market is experiencing its sixth consecutive year of supply deficit. According to the Silver Institute and Metals Focus on the World Silver Survey 2026, global silver is projected to run a deficit of about 46.3 million ounces in 2026, 15% wider than the 40.3-million-ounce shortfall in 2025.

From a demand-structure perspective:

  • Around 50–55% of annual silver demand comes from industrial applications.

This includes electronics, photovoltaics, electric vehicles and medical uses.

  • Photovoltaics is a key driver of silver demand.

Some estimates place solar-related silver demand at roughly 60 million ounces in 2026, representing a significant share of total demand.

  • Silver has been in a structural supply deficit for six consecutive years.

Annual consumption has exceeded newly mined and recycled supply throughout this period.

By contrast, gold demand is more heavily influenced by investment demand, official-sector purchases and its role as a store of value. In Q2 2026, official-sector net purchases reached about 289 tonnes, up 62% year-on-year and marking the highest second-quarter total on record, while bar and coin demand stood at around 307 tonnes.

From a physical precious metals transaction perspective, this divergence implies that:

  • Gold and silver prices can move in the same direction, but their drivers are not identical;
  • Gold is more investment- and store-of-value-oriented, while silver combines investment and industrial attributes;
  • Actual physical transactions also depend on product size, purity, certification, inventory, premiums and delivery terms.

For providers of physical precious metals products, the current environment supports enhanced client education. Investors can be helped to understand:

  1. The fundamental differences in demand structure between gold and silver;
  2. The distinct logic of investment-oriented versus industrial precious metals;
  3. Product weight, purity, brand and certification;
  4. Possible differences between purchase and future buyback prices;
  5. Custody, delivery and future handling arrangements;
  6. Whether the product matches the investor’s allocation objective and time horizon.

For investors, a neutral question is:

When I allocate gold or silver, am I primarily configuring a store-of-value asset, or a metal with significant industrial demand?

Synchronous price declines do not imply identical investment logic. A more balanced approach is to assess price movements, supply-demand structures, product terms and personal allocation objectives together before deciding whether gold, silver or other physical precious metals products fit a longer-term plan.
