Zero-Yield Assets Under Pressure: Why Gold and Silver Still Attract Allocation

As global bond yields rise, the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets such as gold and silver has increased. Yet ETF holdings, central bank purchases, and physical silver demand continue to grow—creating a paradox of rising holding costs alongside persistent allocation demand. Understanding this tension helps investors reassess the long-term value of precious metals.

Market Snapshot: A Clear Contradiction

As of October 27, spot gold was trading near $4,008 per ounce and silver near $53.96 per ounce, with the gold-to-silver ratio at about 74.3. Meanwhile, the US 10-year Treasury yield has risen above 5%, further increasing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold.

Conventional logic suggests higher yields should reduce the appeal of non-yielding assets. Yet global physically backed gold ETF holdings have reached a record 4,256 tonnes, with third-quarter net inflows of $31 billion.

Data Interpretation: Three Key Signals

1. Central banks continue to accumulate

China's central bank purchased 23 tonnes of gold in September, its largest monthly increase since October 2023, extending its buying streak to 23 months; official holdings now stand at 2,410 tonnes. Central bank buying is typically driven by reserve diversification and long-term value preservation, not short-term yield.

2. ETF flows remain positive

Despite gold's pullback from January highs, global gold ETFs recorded $31 billion in third-quarter inflows, including about $10 billion in September alone—showing that institutional and long-term allocation demand has not disappeared despite higher yields.

3. Silver's physical deficit persists

The silver market is projected to record its sixth consecutive annual supply deficit, with a 46.3 million ounce gap in 2026, about 15% wider than 2025’s 40.3 million ounce shortfall. Industrial applications account for about 58% of silver demand, keeping physical supply-demand dynamics a key price support.

Thinking Framework

1. Is yield the same as total return?

Bonds provide interest income; gold and silver provide preservation, diversification, and long-term purchasing power functions. These are not directly comparable on the same dimension.

2. Who bears the holding cost?

Central banks and long-term allocators focus on reserve value and portfolio function; short-term traders are more sensitive to yields and price volatility. Different holding purposes lead to different responses.

3. What does the gold-to-silver ratio indicate?

At about 74.3, the ratio is above the historical average of roughly 60, offering a reference point for assessing whether silver is relatively undervalued versus gold—though it is not an automatic trading signal.

Allocation Perspective

For investors focused on physical precious metals, collectible gold and silver products, and long-term portfolio allocation, consider:

  • Whether gold and silver still serve preservation and diversification roles in the portfolio;
  • Whether central bank buying and ETF inflows persist, reflecting long-term demand foundations;
  • Whether silver's supply-demand gap is narrowing, affecting medium-term price support;
  • How changes in the yield environment affect holding horizon and allocation weight.

A rising cost of holding non-yielding assets does not automatically mean falling allocation value. When central banks, ETFs, and physical demand continue to support gold and silver, the real question is not "whether to hold" but "in what role, at what weight, and over what horizon."

Zero yield. Real value.
